Google Marketing Live 2026 recap in short
Google Marketing Live 2026 took place on 20 May 2026. Google’s announcement collection and its Google Ads Help notice date the event to that day. The main announcements for advertisers were new ad formats for AI Mode in Search, Ask Advisor (one AI agent across Google Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center and Google Marketing Platform), journey-aware bidding for lead generation, demand-led budget pacing, and updates to Asset Studio, Demand Gen and Shopping.
Much of it was announced, not shipped. Some items were in testing or beta, and others were promised for “the coming months”. Several related posts went out before the event: AI Max updates on 30 April and bidding news on 7 May. This recap lists each item with the status Google gave and a link to the Google source, then what to do about it.

Search ads in AI Mode
Google’s post on ads for the AI era of Search (20 May 2026) described four formats:
- Conversational discovery ads: ads that answer a specific question with creative tailored by Gemini. Testing.
- Highlighted answers: ads shown within AI Mode’s lists of recommendations. Testing.
- AI-powered Shopping ads: product ads with generated explanations of why a product fits, aimed at larger purchases. Coming months.
- Business Agent for leads: an agent inside the ad that answers questions from potential customers. Coming months.
Google also said its Direct Offers pilot, launched in January 2026, would soon add promotion bundles, checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol, and travel. The same post names AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping and Performance Max as the foundation for taking advantage of these formats. Ads can already appear in AI Overviews with no opt-out, per Google’s AI Overviews help page.
AI Max: AI Brief, disclaimers, Shopping and Travel
Posted on 30 April 2026 as part of the run-up, Google’s AI Max anniversary post announced:
- AI Brief: written guidelines for messaging, matching and audiences. Rolling out in English for AI Max for Search over the coming months, then Performance Max and AI Max for Shopping.
- Text disclaimers: required text that always appears, even with final URL expansion. Rolling out in the following weeks.
- AI Max for Shopping: text customization, final URL expansion and format selection for Shopping campaigns, with a one-click upgrade. Available.
- Search campaigns for Travel. Available.

Bidding and budgets
Google’s bidding and budgeting post (7 May 2026) covered four items:
- Journey-aware bidding (beta): lets Search campaigns on Target CPA learn from the whole lead-to-sale journey, including goals you don’t bid on. It helps most where later stages, like qualified leads or sales, are imported into Google Ads.
- Smart Bidding Exploration: already on Search; a beta for Performance Max with product feeds and for Shopping was due within a few weeks.
- Demand-led pacing (coming months, Search and Shopping): spends more on high-demand days and less on slow ones, without exceeding monthly and daily spending limits.
- Campaign total budgets (available): one budget for a set number of days, for Search, Shopping and Performance Max.
None of these replaces a correct target. Our Smart Bidding guide covers setting one.
Ask Advisor and Ads Advisor
Ask Advisor (20 May 2026) is a cross-product agent spanning Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center and Google Marketing Platform. Google said it was in beta for English-language accounts, with more features in the coming months. Examples include building campaigns from Merchant Center data and answering performance questions across products.
Separately, on 21 April 2026, Google’s Ads Advisor post said Ads Advisor is available to all English-language accounts and announced three capabilities for the coming months: proactive policy troubleshooting, security monitoring, and faster certifications. For how Google’s agents compare with an independent review, see Google Ads Advisor alternatives.
Asset Studio, YouTube and Demand Gen
Google’s Asset Studio post (20 May) described generating assets from a brief, brand guidelines and website, refining them in plain language, and one-click A/B tests, with new video creation rolling out globally in English over the summer.
The Demand Gen post (20 May) covered Google Maps inventory for Demand Gen, checkout links expanding to nine more markets, product feeds in more verticals, creating a Demand Gen campaign from an existing campaign’s settings (such as Performance Max), and campaign type attribution and uplift experiments. Dynamic product videos from Merchant Center were described as coming soon; most other items were described without a date.
Shopping, commerce and measurement
The commerce post (20 May) said checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol will roll out in Canada and Australia in the coming months and later in the UK, and that AI performance insights in Merchant Center are rolling out in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US in the coming months.
On measurement, Google’s Analytics 360 post (20 May) said Meridian, Google’s marketing mix model, is coming to Google Analytics 360, and described qualified future conversions in Google Ads, which link upper-funnel spend to later sales. An earlier 5 May post announced a Data Manager summary view (coming months) and a no-code Google tag upgrade (coming weeks).
What to do now
- Separate announced from available. Plan around what is in your account today, not around “coming months”.
- Lead-gen accounts: import later-stage outcomes (qualified leads, sales) into Google Ads. Journey-aware bidding and most other new bidding depend on them.
- Fixed-length promotions: use campaign total budgets instead of editing daily budgets.
- Before AI Mode formats arrive: check your AI Max and Performance Max settings, and read your search terms for longer, question-style searches.
- Online stores: keep Merchant Center data and landing pages accurate, since generated explanations and AI Max for Shopping draw on them.
- Regulated wording: check whether text disclaimers are available before turning on final URL expansion.
- Don’t miss the changes that already happened: the AI Max auto-upgrade and the August bidding change are in our Google Ads updates 2026 roundup.
Most of these announcements add automation. Checking what that automation did is still your job. Boxoo’s performance and structure agent reviews settings and changes every day and files a case when something shifts, with the evidence and a fix you can apply or steps to follow. Nothing changes until you press Apply. Run a free Google Ads audit to see where your account stands.
